Will Fitzhugh’s practice centers on all aspects of family law, including divorce, complex equitable distribution, custody and visitation, child and spousal support, same-sex partnership agreements, adoption, premarital and separation agreements, and protective orders. For over thirty-two years, Mr. Fitzhugh has assisted people in resolving conflicts so that they can move forward in their lives with purpose and control. He has extensive trial experience throughout the Richmond Metropolitan area.
He is a former Chair of the Joint Alternative Dispute Committee of the Virginia State Bar and Virginia Bar Association. He was one of the earliest members of the Richmond collaborative community and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. Mr. Fitzhugh graduated from the University of Virginia in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English Language and Literature. He swam for the UVA Swim Team and was a member of 1987 ACC Champions.
In 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, Mr. Fitzhugh has been named to Virginia Business magazine's list of Virginia "Legal Elite" in Family Law/Domestic Relations.
Mr. Fitzhugh graduated from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1992 where he received the Charles T. Norman Award as Best All-Around Graduate of Class of 1992. He was the Chairperson, Client Counseling and Negotiation Board and helped found the Robert R. Merhige, Jr. National Environmental Negotiation Competition. He was a member of the University of Richmond National Trial Team, 1991 – 1992. Mr. Fitzhugh was a founding board member of Chesterfield County Court Appointed Special Advocates, CASA, which is an organization of volunteers appointed by judges to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children as they journey through the court system. For two years, Mr. Fitzhugh coordinated the Richmond Bar Association’s Court Docent Program which provides school children the opportunity to meet judges and other court officials, tour the courthouse and learn more about the court system.
Mr. Fitzhugh has lectured at a number of continuing legal education seminars for other lawyers, including "Complex Divorce Financial Issues in Virginia," “Exploring Custody, Visitation, and Support Issues,” “Financial Settlement Strategies for Your Divorce Clients,” “Divorce Law A-Z,” “Equitable Divorce Settlements,” “Preventing Critical Financial Mistakes During Divorce,” “Child Custody and Visitation,” and “Never Married Couples and Co-Parenting Issues,” and “Same-Sex Marriage Rights.”
Mr. Fitzhugh developed and moderated the 2023 and 2024 Chesterfield Juvenile Court Judges CLE regarding best practices in Juvenile and Domestic Court. Mr. Fitzhugh also moderated the 2024 Richmond Bar Association's Professional Development Series, as well as the 2023 Richmond Bar Association's "How Elections are Run: Processes & Hot Topics."
As a divorced parent of two grown children, including an autistic daughter, he understands the challenges involved in co-parenting effectively after divorce. As a result of his daughter being autistic, he has been involved in numerous issues regarding special needs children, including being a former member of the Henrico County Transition Committee. As an experienced negotiator, Mr. Fitzhugh has also been selected to judge the Finals of the Robert R. Merhige, Jr. National Environmental Negotiation Competition.
Mr. Fitzhugh serves on a number of Boards, including the Positive Vibe Foundation. He has served on the board of the Oliver White Hill Foundation in the past.
For over 18 years, Mr. Fitzhugh has taught classes on self-defense and firearms law.
